Marianne Wanamaker is a professor of economics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Haslam College of Business. She serves as the executive director of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy and is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Wanamaker’s research focuses on labor economics, economic history, and education, with particular emphasis on workforce development and the historical roots of economic inequality.

Wanamaker has held several prominent roles in public service, including serving as a senior labor economist on the White House Council of Economic Advisers from 2017 to 2018. She is a former associate editor of the Journal of Economic History and has published research in leading academic journals. Her work has been supported by organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Institute of Education Sciences.

She has received numerous awards for her teaching and research, including the University of Tennessee’s Alexander Prize and the Haslam College of Business’s Richard C. Reizenstein Outstanding Commitment to Students Award. Wanamaker holds a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University.
